Mary Plumb
Falconer Central Schools STEAMMs. Plumb earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in 1996. She served as an officer in the United States Air Force, overseeing the airfield operations and air traffic control facilities at Travis AFB, CA. While working for the Sacramento County Airport System and Sacramento International Airport, managing federal grants and construction projects, Ms. Plumb attended Chapman University, earning her teaching certificate and MAE in Curriculum and Instruction. Ms. Plumb then taught mathematics, science and STEM for 18 years, to students in grades 5 - 12 in California and New York. Her favorite teaching endeavors center around project-based learning, including a yearlong interdisciplinary focus on water consumption and distribution, a class construction of a simulated Martian surface for programmed rovers, and a middle school design slam that involved researching and designing a 3D model of an adaptive playground. Ms. Plumb advises the Falconer Key Club, whose members traveled to the Dominican Republic in 2017 to build water distribution systems in remote mountain villages. Since then, Key Club built and maintains a community garden that provides fresh produce all summer to local food pantries. Ms. Plumb has contributed to inquiry-based lesson design and implementation with the Math Teacher Circles in Buffalo and Rochester, and co-facilitated high school professional development sessions in work funded by the AIM-TRU NSF grant awarded to Buffalo State. She is currently serving as the District PreK-12 STEAM Coordinator at Falconer Central Schools, and is a member of AMTNYS, NCTM, NSTA, STANYS and CSTA.
