Karen Muscarella earned her B.A. in Biochemistry from Canisius College and her M.S.Ed. from SUNY Buffalo. Mrs. Muscarella began her career as a research scientist. She worked for Cellular Products Inc. developing DNA based HIV diagnostic kits. For the Buffalo VA Medical Center, she established and conducted a COPD Study Clinic. With over 20 years of experience at Akron Central Schools, Mrs. Muscarella has taught AP Biology, Living Environment, and Grade 8 Science. Her professional interests include mentoring new science staff, tutoring through Erie 1 Boces, and facilitating the after-school homework group program. She is a member of both STANYS and NSTA. Outside of school, she is involved with the Taste of Buffalo as a restaurant committee volunteer. She is active in her parish as a religious education instructor, mentor, picnic and auction volunteer, and homeless shelter volunteer. She entered education realizing that researchers and teachers are poised in a unique position. While we “stand on the shoulders of giants,” it is our legacy to empower students so that their discoveries will far overshadow our own. To be selected as a Master Teacher affords the unique opportunity to work alongside professionals who possess the same passion for sharing the power of STEM curriculum with the next generation.
